Foods that are beneficial for eye health and vision

Today, specialists are unanimous in their verdict: diet plays an essential role in maintaining our visual health, especially when it comes to diabetic macular edema or AMD.

The advantages of fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamin C

Excellent for good health in general, vitamin C also offers precious benefits for our eyes. It helps to partially absorb damaging sun rays thanks to an antioxidant. So it is advised to consume without moderation these fruits and vegetables that are bursting with goodness:

  • Bell peppers
  • Broccoli
  • Grapes
  • Strawberries

The role of Omega-3 in helping prevent AMD

While the benefits of Omega-3 on cholesterol and blood thinning have long been endorsed, less well known is their role in fighting to prevent AMD, and in overall eye health.

Particularly beneficial for eyes, Omega-3 can be found in oily fish, such as salmon, but also in linseed, walnuts, soya and some types of meat (beef, lamb).

Sun protection thanks to legumes and green vegetables

Legumes, such as chickpeas and lentils, are rich in zinc. It’s this essential nutrient that helps the liver to release vitamin A and export it as far as the retina in order to produce melanin, which provides natural protection against ultraviolet rays.

Green vegetables (spinach, kale) also contain antioxidants (lutein and zeaxanthin) that help protect against the harmful effects of the sun and its ultraviolet rays.

Carrots: best ally for eyesight

Rich in beta-carotene, carrots, pumpkins and sweet potatoes are all great foods for reducing one’s risks of eye diseases, while also pleasing one’s taste buds.
